Conversion and Refurbishment
St Clare’s, Oxford the International Sixth Form and College has asked Ian Bridge Consultancy to design and contract manage the refurbishment and conversion of one of their Edwardian student houses that also contains a music school.
The project comprised the refurbishment of an Edwardian property, with improvements to classrooms and music rooms, together with the conversion of student accommodation into administrative offices.
The mixed use of the building meant that our first challenge was to ensure that the activities of the music school did not impact adversely on office users and students being taught in the classrooms. Research into soundproofing materials, sound booths and careful planning of adjacencies in our design distanced the various uses from each other within the building and compartmentalised the music school activities within a soundproofed environment, thereby minimising disruption to teaching and office users.
